How do football players know which is the refs whistle when there's so many going off all the time?

It's louder and closer to the football pitch. I guess the players themselves know when the refs whistle is blown, especially after a ball is thrown out, there's a penalty shot or there's a possibility that someone's going to get a red or yellow card.
