As the temperature rises, causing the ice to melt, the molecules move further away from each other. When the water is solid, the molecules are all very close together giving it a definite shape. When the molecules are further apart, they won't form as tight of a shape, making it a liquid. As it heats more, it will become a gas or vapor and the molecules will be even further away from each other.

As the ice absorbs heat, the molecules begin to move faster. This causes the molecules to move farther apart. That is why it changes from a solid to a liquid. This same mechanism applies to nearly all substances, no just ice/water.
A liquid is different from a solid in that the liquid does not have a definite shape. A liquid will take on the shape of the container it is in. It does this because the molecules have this greater amount of energy and are not so tightly "bound" to each other.
