I'm currently vacationing in Germany and am taking about 3 days to go to Holland (again). I'm looking for maybe some sit-down place where you can order a platter full of bite-sized portions of many cheese that are labled so you can pick your favorite. Maybe the place is even coupled with wine-tasting, which in this case would be even more awesome. Any suggestions in/on the way to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, or Utrecht would be appreciated!

Edam is a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland, some 20 km northeast of Amsterdam.

Edamer cheese is a Dutch cheese that is traditionally sold as spheres with pale yellow interior and a coat of red or yellow paraffin. It is named after the town of Edam in the province of North Holland. Edamer coated with black wax rather than the usual red or yellow has aged for at least 17 weeks. It is also popular in the Nordic countries.

Edamer cheese has a very mild taste, slightly salty or nutty and almost no smell when compared to other cheeses. It also has a significantly lower fat content than many other traditional cheeses being approximately 28% with an average protein content of 25%.

A major producer is the Friesland Foods company. In the USA, a popular brand is May-bud, owned by Kraft Foods.

The touristy thing to do is to go to Alkmaar, a town north from Amsterdam. On Thursdays they even put on a historical show of carrying big rounds of Gouda around. Furthermore, Amsterdam and Rotterdam are filled with bars where you can get wine and cheeses. Then, there are the open door markets where they sell cheese and the seller will give you tastes for free before you buy. Have fun!

I have been to the Netherlands 6 times and have yet to discover a cheese tasting establishment (might be a potential buisness idea there!). Being a huge cheese lover myself, I tend to go to the local outdoor markets that are typically set up 1-2 times a week. They have cheese stands, and you can order small bits of many MANY different kinds of cheese. While you're at it, you can grab some fresh baked buns at a bakery stand and some stroopwaffels (syrup waffel cookies) to go with your cheese feast! As a final note, if they have it, try some moosterdkaas. It is a gouda based cheese with musterd seed and typically garlic. It's my favorite! Have fun!
