My boss is out of the office for the next 3 weeks. I'm looking for a new job at the moment, and have interviews etc taking place next week. Who should I hand my notice/resignation to if I decide to leave while my boss is away?

don't leave while your boss is away. you can ask any new employer to wait as you may have to work notice anyway. otherwise you will have to hand it in to the personel manager or a finance director may be able to take it. it depends on the size and structure of your company but i would take time off as holidays to go to interviews and wait for your boss to come back

Give it to the most senior person but also send an email to your boss and say in the email you have handed it to that particular person. CC that person in on the email too so they are aware you have made your boss aware of your handing them the resignation. Put a copy of your resignation on your bosses desk too. (sealed). That should cover you from all angles.

Make sure your resignation is dated. And state in your resignation when your last inteded day of work will be so they know exactly how much notice you have given.

If all your dues on the company are recovered just E-mail it. If the dues are left to be recovered wait till the boss comes back and hand him the resignation.

Give it to the person who's responsible for the boss' department while the boss is away.

To any management aside from your boss. If not an option, then talk to the person with the most seniority for further advice!
Good luck!

His secretary, Next in line or you can leave it on the desk and E-mail the boss/or call. There are no clear guidelines for these. In olden days you just gave it to his wife and wired him a brief of your letter. Alas, them times are gone........ Hey, good luck with next job.

You should really contact HR in your line manager's absence and explain to them the situation. They will advise you on who you should give your notice to. This is the best option as it covers your back

Confidence is nice but don't expect things to move that fast. Also, if your looking for another job without their being aware, why should you care? It obviously isn't worth staying there.
