Actually I wouldn't really say that they are better. The real action in these events is shared memories. For instance I work for a large company that does these sorts of things. Being a better team doesn't involve specifically the fact that ten of us went paintballing considering we were five to a team and were shooting at eachother. We become a team when we are laughing about it later. In this way anything done together is really team building. Now you can share memory of meditation and massage. In fact my company once had a percussionist come out and we did a drum circle kind of deal which was neat and a whole lot of fun. The reason paintball and mountain climbing is more prefered is that like work they are specific goal oriented tasks. So they add a sense of accomplishment. Meditataion, massage, etc are a bit too subjective for that and are honestly not as interactive. Instead of remembering the same activity the people who do those tend to be comparing notes. And this is not a bad thing it is just less shared.

they want the people to interact, to depend and trust each other so as to more effectively work as a team. the others you suggest is a task you do alone so their is no interaction. during physical excersises you depend on each other to complete and win a task/game thus helping to build the relationship you have with your colleagues.
