Your question involves the question of maturity and security. Religion makes one feel secure. It always involves a higher being or force, and most often in a paternal or maternal way. Most people's God is a mother or father or teacher image whether they realise that or not. To have a religion means you belong. And also automatically puts you against another religion (tolerance is merely covering over this basic division between religions)
So does a mature, adult human need a religion? No. But there aren't many people who mature very far. And look at the mess! Most people get as far as dismissing the tooth fairy and santa, but don't really question too much after that.
Answer:
Why religion? Security.
Aren't we adults? In age only.

I'm an atheist and yes I believe religion is a waste of time having been forced into it when I was a kid, and not getting out of the cult till I was 18.

I agree - Following are some of my sentiments on alternatives to religion if you had the proper up-bringing:
Everything you need to know you should have learned in (or prior to) kindergarten -
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you -
Religion is BIG business - make no mistake about it -
Your honorable, hardworking parents should be the only spiritual leaders you need -
Fast talking con-men (under the guise of so-called religious leaders or evangelists) are constantly quoting "god" or spewing some rhetoric in the name of "god" when in reality their message is purely self serving -
Based on the recent discovery of sexual misconduct -
which has been hushed up for years - it is obvious that our so-called religious leaders and their superiors do not really believe in or revere God nor do they know right from wrong
Bible stories are great to listen to as are fairy tales
I believe that religion got started centuries ago simply to keep the masses in line
I've observed people who are getting up there in age and who are guilty of indiscretions - turn to religion for fear of going to hell

Yes, we are adults, but not every part of us is 'adult'. The virus of religion is passed to us in childhood - if we are susceptible to it, and, unfortunately, many of us are. The part of religious people's minds that is the locus of religion is a part that remains in childhood and wilfully refuses to leave it. Have you seen how wilful children can be? I have known personally several religious people who were nevertheless highly intelligent people - but part of them, the religious part, was still a wilful child.

We are ALL religious (about different things)
Some people religiously go to work everyday.
Some religiously wash and wax their cars.
Some religiously don't stop talking.
Some just like to eat junk food.
All people have a GOD... It is whatever they turn to for strength and fulfillment. But many people are under the misguided concept that being RELIGIOUS is the same as having any connections as being a person of FAITH.
Faith is a SUBSTANCE of things HOPED FOR, the EVIDENCE of things NOT SEEN. Faith has it's own physics and has baffled people for centuries.
Yes, many of us ARE adults. All of us are RELIGIOUS. Some of us have FAITH.

Understand this......Jesus Christ spoke out against religion. Read the Bible. Most people link the Bible or Christianity with religion. Religion is man made. Christ spoke of salvation. Only two rules....Love God with all you heart and soul and love your brother as yourself. Religion is a hinderance to salvation.

Because we are humans. There is no religion in the animal society. Religion means regulations. An unregulated human society is a society of "two-legged animals" .
Cats and dogs eat, we also eat.
Cats and dogs sleep, we also sleep.
Cats and dogs mate, we also mate.
Cats and dogs defend themselves, we also defend.
We have religion, cats and dogs have not.

Sufficient people of sufficient intelligence are religious. Why that is so is a mystery to me, but there is obviously something going on. I think it is rather immature to dismiss that thing out of hand.
