Practice daily, at least an hour. Experiment with different techniques. Watch progressions so you understand music theory better. Keep an open mind and play every melody you hear, even commercials. Jam with others. Play complete songs and pay attention to little details. When you can afford to, move up to some better equipment because if it sounds better you will hear more. Get some transcription magazines and learn to read tab. Study individual guitarists who appeal to you so you will have influences. I would suggest the following albums for digestion.
Disraeli Gears, by Cream.
Are You Experienced, by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Led Zeppelin's first 4 albums.
Blow By Blow, by Jeff Beck.
Machine Head, by Deep Purple.
Passion And Warfare, by Steve Vai.
The Best Of The Who.
Fragile, by Yes.
Synchronicity, by The Police.
The Beatles Second Album.
Now that should give you some interesting things to think about. If you like country you might want to check out some Chet Atkins as well, or Flatt and Scruggs.
Good luck and keep on jamming!

Practise 16 hours a day 7 days a week and you will get there reasonably quickly but technique only comes with playing notes carefully. So Id recommend a less vigorous approach and go for someone who likes to "Jam" and then practise an hour a day. Try new things and get your "ear" in tune with the notes your playing otherwise you will sound like crap.

Good luck.

I find that the best way to become good at playing guitar is to play.

Look up websites like www.cyberfret.com to get you started.

You should play 7 days a week, 365 days a year, as much as you possibly can handle.

Practice every day. Take lessons, I gave up trying to play when I was young because I got frustrated and gave up. 15 years later I took lessons, I'm not good but I can play now.
