I am confused as to whether "single" means single person, or single bed.

A single room is a room for one person only.
A double room is for 2 people with one bed (double bed or queen or king size).
A twin room is for 2 people with two beds.

There is also another category:
Double room for single use, which is a room normally for 2, which is occupied by only 1 person.

Hope that helps.

The answer fom "love2travel" adequately explains room meanings. Having lived in Guatemala for 4 years now though, don't be surprised to find your bed to be rather small, no matter which room you order.
