Is being working class something to be proud of, or something to aspire to not be?

Being working class in a country that supposedly guarantees that everybody has equal rights should not be an issue.
In the practice, whoever belongs to the working class has lower income, a tendency to achieve lower levels of education and they have to live with the prejudice that they are less clever or important than the leading class or aristocracy.
As much of this comes with your birthplace, changing from one class to the other one takes not only a huge effort, also luck and talent to make the right contacts.
Some special gifted people are above classes. That is the only situation I believe somebody can be proud of.

Hi Ian

The criteria for determining "class" was defined more than 90 years ago, in the run up to the WW1. It was based on a person`s annual income.

There were three distinct classes: WORKING, MIDDLE & UPPER.

The incomes were:
£0 - £300 = Working Class +
£300 - £2000 Middle Class +
£2000 and over Upper Class

To get a better sense of this, I suggest you obtain a copy of George Orwell`s "The Road To Wigan Pier." Which was published in 1936.

Tap George Orwell or the book`s title into Google. You can actually access it On-line, quite readilly .

Remember it was the WC, who made the Industrial Revolution work. The Middle Classes were the merchants, managers, shopkeepers and the whipcrackers. The Upper were for ever the ruling classes who exploited the other two.

Regards

Being working class gets a lot more respest than being a dropout bum scrounging off the state. Many people work hard to improve themselves. There is nothing wrong with being proud of being working class and striving to achieve in live.

Many working class people are more open and honest than those of other classes making them bettter people in me opinion! I'd rather call a decent working class person a friend than a two faced back stabbing middle class person.

Both. Being working class is something to be very proud of. You are the backbone of your country's economy. But, you will be treated like dirt from people higher up in the comany. If you have talents and skills that are suited to management orieted roles, they will go to waste.

If you want to be working class, great. But if you try to advance to managment, you will not be taken seriously without a college degree.

Is it not the case nowadays that all of us are working class as once defined and that social strata is divided by money rather than community.

If you define working class as being a good member of the community, working and accumulating wealth, giving back to the community either time, deed or money then this can only be something to be proud of.

One should always strive to better oneself and ones community and if that drive elevates you from your definition of working class, look round you, the people there are just like you.

Good luck!

Both i think, I'm proud to say that i work hard for everything i have, but it's not something I do because i love doing it, if i could win the lotto, or come in to some money that would be great and I would not miss the hard work.

to be proud of, whatever you achieve in life you have earned and worked hard for, it is definitely something to feel proud of. When i bought my car after just passing my test i was really proud of myself because i had earned it. Now i am saving for a new car and it will take me up until just after Christmas to get it but when i do i will feel proud that i could save and bought it by myself, rather than say to people, oh you know, daddy's credit card. People like that will not know what to do with themselves when that card is taken away from them and they won't know how to stand on their own two feet. For us working class, yes it is hard but we have something to be proud of and achieve something

I'm middle class, but I think being working class is not something anyone should be ashamed of. If they were, that would just mean other people's snobbery had got to them.
