I've just seen a news report about David Cameron has started a 'hug a hoodie' campaign, and I thought for a moment I must have heard it wrong. After seeing it again on News 24, it turns out I hadn't!

It seems quite obvious that teenagers (and some young adults) don't wear hooded tops just to keep warm or for fashion reasons - rather it hides their face and profile while entering shops and shopping malls. Cameras are everywhere these days, and it's surely no coincidence that hooded tops were the response from teenagers wishing to avoid recognition and detection.

My question is, should more be done to combat this disguising technique, or would doing so be intruding upon a person's right to wear whatever they wish within reason?

If more should be done - what?

.

I don't think you can really do much. It is intrusive either way and gets personel-but they must be wearing the hoods to avoid being caught playing truant and being faced with the evidence or for whatever reason they wear them. Since there are cameras everywhere these days, I don't think they will feel comfortable sticking to the hooded trend for long as fashion changes. Furthermore, as they grow older they will change a bit and want to change their trend too. I think perhaps they feel secure within the hood or afraid of being mis identified too. Many reasons really. I think you should do a survey on it at schools to get a clearer idea, as teenagers should be giving the answers so they can help with the solutions.

well a lot of teenagers and young adults do wear them for that reason but you must think of the people that wear them just to have a jumper and keep warm. I have worn hoodies before and i don't wear the hood up but what if it starts to rain?? obviously i put it up so automatically i'm being stereotyped into a thug. People should be able to wear what they want, also you can tell whether the person is a thug or not just by looking at their faces not their clothes.

Whenever I worked in Maplin, we had a policy that hats wear to be removed and hoods took down inside the shop, you didn't do this you where asked to leave... Plus it's not only teenagers, we had two 40 odd year old's in trying to steal a laptop power supply, I was 19 at the time, and the f**ker tried to punch me for asking him to empty his pockets, the manager came over and grabbed the power supply out of his coat, and the guy tried to hit my dad on the way out... So it's not just teenagers that need dealing with, it's all low-life scum...

I think its terrible that hoodies are now a sign that your a hooligan, i have lots of hoodies and i now feel as if i get funny looks from people and pensioners especially when i pop round to the shops..! I personally dont think that something should be done with hoodies as there probably the most comfiest items of clothing i have, there should be more done to sort out the kids that are wearing them. Stop them bringing hoodies down to their uncivilised level...!

i think the whole thing is silly. i wear hoodies because they are comfortable. if a store is uncomfortable with people walking in with hoods up and such then post a sign that asks that they be worn down. if a general ban were made i think the rest of the world would laugh, along with the general population.

Motorcycle helmets and hats are banned from high security areas such as banks for the same reason - it's more difficult to recognise people on CCTV when they have these things on.

If the reason is security, then hoods should be made to be taken off.

hold on im a teenager myself and i wear hoodies the odd time there is nothing wrong with them it is just people use them for robberies and concealing their identity only these people should be dealt with coz me myself i dont wear the good up (hard to do if your hair is in a mohawk lol)but some people are using the for the obvious reasons you said!in my opinion i think the hoodies should be made so they can't be tightened to conceal your identity!

It is just rude to wear hats inside anyway. There is no reason to have the hood on indoors.

Bring back corporal punishment. There is no respect and the innocent are the ones that suffer. Are these kids that sensitve and that wimpish that they need to be warm inside???? No they are deceptive. This softly softly approach is ridiculous.

i agree with twokay
if you adopt policys of no hoods on heads like no helmets then that could resolve some issues!
i used to wear hoodies before the hoodies started doing this!
did that make sense??!

Since honest persons would never dream of concealing their identities, and few people are so fragile as to require a hood indoors, I say shoot them on sight.

Of course, I *am* an American, and consistently shoot from the hip.
