If you are visiting a reputable hotel in Hanoi or Ho Che Minh City, the tap water is OK. IF you go to a restaurant, they will serve boiling hot flower tea or either black tea from Hunan, China. You may not like the taste, but the tea will fight bacteria.
Letting water come to a boil in not enough; it should be boiled for about five minutes. The key to success is to drink liquid every chance you get. 40c is hot, especially during the dry season.
