I think that Naas Botha would make an excellent coach. Back in the day, he played the game from the back and could read the game very well. If you can remember, he was always underneath any ball that came his way.

It seems, as a result of a dispute, SA Rugby refused to grant a request by Springbok coach Jake White that he join the team for the Tri-Nations matches in Australia and New Zealand.

Why is that?

Here's the story on Jake White...

He currently has a contract until the 2007 World Cup. He wanted an extension until the 2009 British Lions tour to South Africa. Jake claimed that he has been approached by England to fill a coaching role and stated that he would be inclined to leave if the extension was not given.
After having discussions, SA rugby decided not to extend his contract and apparently will have a reviewal of his contract after the Tri-Nations. Naturally Jake didn't like it and the bad blood within the administration of SA rugby has continued.

I believe that Jake will remain with the Boks until the World Cup and afterwards will leave for greener pastures which will be a very sad thing indeed.

I reckon Jake White is the best man for the job. He has taken us from 5th in the world to a team that other countries now fear to play. He has a winning ratio of 70% which reminds me of other glory days such as 1998 (17 consecutive wins), 1995 (World Champs) and eras such as the 60s.
Unfortunately, as result of the infighting and shocking lack of respect, it looks as though we might lose yet another South African to England.

As for Naas, I believe that he definitely has a role to play in SA rugby but not as Head Coach. He was unquestionably a rugby great but does he have the ability to be the number1 coach of the team? To be honest, I'm not sure.
But I do know that I want him involved in some way.

If Jake had to leave, who would become coach? At the moment I don't believe that we have a man in SA of the required calibre.
I do however think that Rassie Erasmus, the current coach of the Free State Cheetahs, is an option to look at. He is a calculating, foxy coach that has huge potential. He is still relatively inexperienced though but under him, the Cheetahs won the Currie Cup for the first time since 1976!

If we do want to go the foreign route, then I think Laurie Maines of New Zealand is worth a shout. He guided the Cats to the Super 12 sem-finals in 2000 and 2001 - an amazing achievement considering that the Cats have been so useless in all the other years.

Cheers

Could the failure England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson take over, do you think? He is a skilled and famous football coach, but could probably develop into a master rugby coach. . Or maybe best to keep him on this side of the world...
