First, a BE in CS is great; but in the game dev industry, NOT required (I was in it for 10 years, and I had a BA in Psychology).

What you'll need to do is SHOW that you can program. Program up a graphic demo that shows you can master the process.

The hot thing now is physics and animation. If you can write a demo program that shows off your understanding of physics, that's a great way to get your foot in the door of a game dev house. (What that demo looks like depends on you, really: I've seen some cool ones that showed off rag-doll effects, bouncing boxes, etc.)

Lastly, and definitely not least important, is Network. Go to Gamasutra.com and hobnob on the message boards. Strike up a friendship with a programmer who works for a company you admire. If you live in a city where there is game development going on (LA, San Diego, the Bay area, etc.), try to get to know some of the people there. Try emailing them a question; make yourself into the novice, humbling learning at the feet of the masters. In short, build a relationship into a game company or two.
