RSVP stand for "Respondez, S'ils Vous Plait" which is French for "Please Respond".

The reason they use it on wedding invitations is generally because weddings usually involve food, either in the form of a dinner or in the form of hors d'oeuvres or desserts at a reception. Food and beverages for weddings is very costly, so it's nice if you can get a pretty decent head count when planning for food so that you have enough for everyone without having $1000 worth of food that goes to waste. It's just a common courtesy on the part of guests to respond. Sometimes, there is a card enclosed with the invitation for you to return which states whether or not you will be attending, and whether or not you will be bringing a guest. If there is no card, simply call the parents of the bride and give your information.

RSVP is french for "Repondez s íl vous plait" which means to reply if one can or cannot make it to the invitation. This is important so as to know how many will come. This can be also used not only on weddings but on many other occasions.

Respondez s'il vous plait - means respond if you please. Most people want to know how many will be attending their wedding so proper arrangements can be made for catering, etc. , so they would like a response from the individuals invited to the event.

R.S.V.P. on wedding invitations are very important, you rent the building, order the cake, champagne, and most important the seating. Unfortunately few respond and have to be called personally before the ordering can be confirmed.

It helps to know HOW MANY people will be showing up or sending their regrets if they cannot show. It's easier to plan seating arrangements and how many meals to order.

It is a COURTESY to the person(s) holding the event.

Because some people have to pay per head at the reception so they need to have a clue how many people are coming.

Well, according to Miss Piggy, it means "Runnez to the Store and buy Votre Presents", so I guess you would include it to see how many gifts you are getting.

it means "please respond"
it is french
(R)espondez (S)il (V)ous (P)lait

Used on party invites and other invites as well
it is considered rude not to reply back that you are coming, as the sender usually needs to know if you are coming to the event so that they can plan for food, favors, seating etc.
