The whole Microsoft thing is a scam - that's why Bill Gates is the richest bloke in the world!!
What choice have you?, DOS? It's freaking scandalous - the whole world is being milked by a monopoly of gargantuan proportions.

Getting back to the main question:

The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification is something that is available as a Windows Update which checks if your copy of Windows is in fact genuine or not. Many users have experienced problems with this however, with the checker wrongly stating genuine copies are in fact fakes.

This has lead to virus/malware creators using this as a good piggyback. There are now a few infections doing the rounds that are mimicing the genuine advantage notification pop-ups which actually lead to a malware payload being downloaded and your computer compromised.

One such culprit is WGAVN.exe which you can view more detail on here:

I would either go to the microsoft website and check your copy from the official site, or run Prevx1 that will check you dont have any of these malware variants infecting your machine. They are currently offering a Free Trial that will scan your computer and automatically remove all infections free of charge:

Saying you have had XP for 8yrs sounds like a scam!! XP definitely hasn't been around that long. If you have the XP key, then ring or contact Microsoft at:-

Microsoft Ltd
Microsoft Campus

RG6 1WG
UNITED KINGDOM

Phone: (011)(44)0870 60 10 100

Fax: (011)(44)0870 60 20 100

- and they will probably be able to sort you out

XP was released on Oct 25, 2001. So 2001 + 8 = 2009.

Wow, we've been transported to the future by some kind of time machine.

it is genuine of course it is, dont worry it could be a fake hackers email just ignore it. where did you get ti from? if it was dowenloaded from limewire or something then it may not be. did you buy it from microisoft if so it will be genuine. did it have a serial number with it? if so there is an even better chance it is genuine. hope this helps.
