I would suggest not to drink from water taps. It would be much safer to boil it before drinking it, even if you get the water from 5 star hotel taps.

Clean drinking water are easily availble in shops. Over here, you would most likely to find a few varieties; most common, mineral water and reverse osmosis water.

If you would like to try, you can drink water at certain jungle parks in Malaysia, ie Templer's Park's water is famous for being clean.

like others already said, i drink bottled water which is readily
available almost everywhere at few RMs. Also, if you stay in
an expensive hotel (say, more than 200RMs per night)
they give you a bottle or two for free everyday.
However, when I wash my mouth after brushing teeth, I use
tap water which means i swallow some amount of tap water,
but it's OK for myself.

In some cities near the river (e.g. Kota Bharu) the tap water
in the hotel has thin but visible brown color (came from the mud
of the river i think).

NO! do not drink water from the tap unless you are a local. If you boil the water before you drink it, then it will be fine.

Yes it is safe to drink water from the tap in Canada, but i filter my water anyways.

You can find clean drinking water, at 7eleven or any supermarket. (bottled)

you can buy water filters almost anywhere. ex. walmart.

I believe that tap water isn't really safe no matter where you are. Water refilling stations are almost everywhere these days I don't think you'll have a hard time finding clean water to drink. And if all else fails, get a kettle and boil it yourself.
