Amanda, I think you will find the answer to this question and many others here:
http://www.urologyhealth.org/about/
My personal experience is that the position of the bladder and urether is actually better. It is only because we can (and it's considered manly) that most men stand to pee. As one gets older the need to appear 'manly' diminishes (because one doesn't need to prove it!). That, at least, is the reason I sometimes sit rather than stand.
There may be other reasons to do with age as well, for example a less complete functioning of the sphincter which controls the flow - not to the point where one becomes incontinent but in the sense of a tap that keeps dripping a while after you've turned it off.

For one, I don't enjoy cleaning and wiping down a toilet from pee spray/splash,plus you dont have to worry about putting the seat back down should a woman need to use the toilet. However I will stand in a public restroom to pee if there is a urinal on the wall,if no urinal is present, then I lift the seat on a regular toilet. Icky!> Some of them public restrooms can be nasty,to want to sit.

For me its just a cleanliness issue. As stated earlier flowing liquid hitting static liquid will cause splatter. In my case the stream isn't exactly laser precise either. So to keep things clean I sit. When we had children that lean on climb on anything and the toilet bowl is just the right height for resting curious hands on, that pushed me to sitting.

It keeps the toilet clean longer. Believe it or not urine splashes everywhere when guys pee standing. Have a guy in the house don't clean your toilet for a month and it will reek of urine even if there is none visible.

Because they have bad aim, and the wife threatened to hit them over the head with the toilet brush if they didn't start sitting down.

maybe if the sit it is easy than standing up as they may pee the seat.
or the may have a medical reason.
it could be anyone that does it.
