There is a chance, but not a big chance. The last time may have been 1908, in Siberia. A small comet or asteroid hit an uninhabited area with the force of an atomic bomb. If that had hit a city it would have been bad. But as asteroids go it was pretty small. Damage was limited to a few hundred square miles in an uninhabited area.

The earth seen from the space reveals that it is full of craters. The earth has been bombarded many times by asteroids and comets, it happened before and it will happen again but the big question is: can we always manage to survive or would we become extinct like the dinosaurs ? extinctions had been haphazard and unpredictable. Surviving has been and will always be a matter of chance , we are unable yet to prevent asteroids from hitting our planet because the orbit of the asteroids are chaotic and unpredictable and most of the time asteroids coming near our blue planet cannot be seen because of the light of the sun which obstructs our view . so lets pray it doesnt happen

Large catastrophic asteroids (1 km or more) have a tendency to hit the Earth around once every 100,000 years. Comets seem to hit the Earth around every 500,000 years. It looks like we're due for an asteroid any day now. It's been around 170,000 years since the last one.
If we spot it in time then there's a chance that we could throw off it's trajectory enough to avoid a collision with Earth. I think we would have to spot it pretty early, though.

Hahahaha, ya, lets just blow it up with a missle... Too bad that will just make it worse. The chances of a collision like the one you describe are very high for Earth in the near future in geological terms (a few thousand years), and as for dealing with it? We would need to exert a constant force to alter the body's path before it reaches earth. Sorry, but your nuclear weapons and high explosives aren't gonna save you this time :-)

One almost just did, 1/2 mile in diameter.
They are now being detected, and many methods, including nuclear bombs and using light pressure are proposed to nudge a big one past earth. If you blow it up, the pieces follow the same path (center of mass).

ofcourse, it happened before and will happen again...
if a big comet is coming to earth, we can use a missler to destroy it and the small pieces become insignificant to destroy earth
