Because they are a democracy with a billion people, because they have nuclear weapons, and because they are one of the upcoming major powers of the next century.
They have problems with Pakistan, but try finding a permament member without any.
They are also a natural balance to China and the West.

No.

India has yet to demonstrate an ability to resolve the issues with Pakistan.

Until India can demonstrate some diplomatic skills it falls a long way down the list of countries with a claim to a full seat on the UN Security Council.

Why not? The Security council is dominated by western powers and China. Why does the world's largest democracy, the second largest populated nation, a nation open to all religions, and an emerging economy with the GDP amoung the top 10 nations deserve to be the member of the security council

Because they're (almost) a superpower.

They are also the largest democracy in the world. Kashmir shouldn't stop them, as both China and Russia have political problems that they haven't resolved yet. (Taiwan, Chechnya, Tibet etc).

There's a stronger case for Germany to take a 6th permanent seat on the security council though.
