Nope the people that were really the servants of Europe before serfdom were the Slavic people. Slav means slave in Latin which the Romans spoke and we all know who the Romans were.

Anno you are right kinda my bad slave comes from medieval Latin not Roman Latin. You are way off base thinking that slavs and Romans had no interaction though dude, who do think lived in the Balkans?

Slava means GLORY in any Slavic language.Or you, (Last White...) think Romans were spoken English in those centuries? Who thinks opposite, needs adittional education. Slavic people had nothing to Romans at that time. Do not mix these two things together.
And, I think Italians are not different than any others. Whole people in Europe who weren't of aristocracy origin, were servants. Discovering new continents brought new servants...If the question is about it?

Actually the Italians comprised what was once the Roman Empire, and they enslaved everyone else...especially the Greeks. Greek slaves were considered by far the best investment because of their intelligence. After a few years of servitude a slave would then be granted his/her freedom and could own property and have his own slaves.
