Globalization and colonication are aspects of the same process.

Globalization can be summed up as the diminishing effect of physical distance.
The pheomenon that we often term "globalization" in every day speech are often old phenomenon, that are now taking effect much faster because interactions no longer take time.
For instance, the spread of fashion from a "successful" culture to the surrounding ones has been around since the dawn of time, but today this can happen much faster.

Colonization was, in its day, intended to do three things; provide Glory for the Empire (Be it french, british or spanish), provide raw materials, and almost more importantly, a market for the industrial products of the homeland.
In effect, capitalist growth is only limited by the size of the market. Similarly, no new markets means stagnation.

The only question is: colonization by whom?

I imagine the most industrialized countries are the ones pushing globalization. Obviously the US, but also China, Japan, South Korean, India, and even Brazil, not to mention the European countries. Sadly, Africa and most of Asia are still coping with the fallout of the original European colonization of the 1800s.
