I go there for reserve duty. Here are a few things to do.
You can go down the Riverwalk, eat at any of the restaurants & take in the night life. There is a mall as well.
The Alamo & Spanish Governor's Mansion.
The Mission Trail.
Go up the Hemisfair Tower to either view or eat/view(the restaurant turns)
The San Antonio Zoo.
Fiesta Texas.
Sea World.

Getting around the city is relatively easy with the major highways & loops.

I would suggest that you go in the fall or spring. Even the winter is better than the summer, unless you to like to bake in the heat.

Anyway, all you have to do is go online and type in San Antonio attractions. All kinds of stuff will pop up for you. Then go to one of the discount travel websites like expedia.com for your plane and rental car. I really like hotels.com for motel/hotel reservations. You can see a lot of virtual tours of motels on that website.

Like the others said, the riverwalk is a must see along with the Alamo and the missions. Then there are a few theme parks in the area. San Antonio is a nice place to visit. Have a good time!

The Alamo, the missions, Docia Schulz' ghost tours, the Witte Museum (fun for the whole family and free on Tuesday evenings), The San Antonio Museum (agan free on Tuesday evening), Brackenridge Park, The San Antonio Zoo and the Eagle train. The River Walk, A ride on the river barge. The children's museum if you have little ones, Josephine theater, Aztec Theater, SeaWorld, 6-Flags Texas (although I like Schlitterbahn better and it's only 30 miles away). I like Southtown on First Friday. You like golfing? Lots of golf courses all over town. Bicycling? The Brackenridge Park and the Government Park off 1604 and McAllister Park on Jones Maltsberger. Well have fun.

Id go to hotwire first. I have used it multiple times and get good deals. Stay downtown a couple of nights then shoot for a place by sea world like the Hyatt then maybe head either to new Braunfels or a bed and breakfast out in the hill country like fredericksburg comfort or multiple other little towns. Find a condo in those areas.

When you get there, you 100% must go to the riverwalk. I live in Killeen/ Fort Hood and go to S. A. alot. I like to eat at a place called ***** Last Resort. The Alamo isn't too far away from the riverwalk. They have gondala rides on the riverwalk. There is also a hugh mall on the riverwalk.

try staying on the riverwalk, it's expensive but well worth it, or if you can find a hotel just off of the riverwalk....
