Don't try for perfection. Try to find the things that really interest the student body and the administrators. Try new and fresh ideas, having a thought for the day written by students. Keep everyone informed as to the schools events. Days off for the month and etc. Have a letter to editor page and a page the prinicipal writes to the students on a monthly basis. Have a craft or cooking section. A welding and wood and car repair section...there has to be a teacher and a student who can help with these. Attend class meetings: student congress and write an article about what they are working on. Sports section of course, keep people in the focus, not the game itself...
you can have a who's dating who section. Make sure you clear everything with the prinicipal or vice or administrator before you print anything, things can get out of hand real easily these days!
Congradulations on Journalism for a year! You will have a great time with it and you will have the best magazine ever - you care enough.

I like the ideas of solveiga. have people report stupid things that teachers say, but only on the last page.
Do some news and announcements and things like that. Have editorials, have a short message from the principal if you want. Do a celebrity page (or half a page) and jokes. print extra credit things you can do for different classes. Find some free concerts like at a park or something and print stuff about those. You could do a page where people write messages to other people.

Good lick with your magazine.

One thing to have for every issue is a student profile. Pick a student at random and ask them questions, and publish a picture.
You should do stories on what matters to students at your school. One good article would be summer job opportunites, scholarships, local colleges, or what options are for the non-college bound.

Another fun idea would be profiles of various teachers.

Additionally, publishing submissions of student art, poetry, stories etc. are always good.
