is it true that certain stuff that's illegal in the US is perfectly fine out in international waters? what kinda stuff? just small stuff like copyright infringment and illegal broadcasts, or more serious stuff like child labor and illicit substances?

it doesn't have to be a ship, it could be an abandoned oil rig or other such permanent sea structure

Yes...small stuff like copyright infringment and illegal broadcasts, AND more serious stuff like child labor and illicit substances.

Not everyone lives under American law

Its a hard thing to define...As all Nations have gotten together, and made laws, that "govern the seas".

You still cant kill some one, or do anything illegal. (Of course, that depends on who catches you at what... What Nation has sent thier patrol boats out after you and caught you doing something that is illegal to Maritime laws.).

I suggest you do a "google search" into Maritime Laws and see what is illegal and what is not illegal...(I'm sure, some where, there has to be written down somewhere, on a google search, the laws of the land, er, seas :)...
