I have a small backyard. Half of it is taken up by my kitchen garden (a rectangle plot) and with a cider block walkway dividing it from a rightangle triangle plot of weedy grass. I want to rip out the grass, widen and make more interesting the pathway. Would like to have a rock patio area. Basically need some good suggestions of how to mix the use of my garden, yet also provide an area that I could enjoy and relax in. Replanting grass is an option, but would like to know some ideas of an urban mixed use backyard. I'm a newbie, but willing to try within a limited budget. Photos and directions would be great. Live in Lower mainland of British Columbia, Canada. Thanks.

may be UK but climate simular to yours
ALSO
curved path + paved area planted with camomile lawn seed between pavers or as a lawn (use tiny Corsican mint in shaded area ) instead of grass gives a lovely fragrance when walked upon + lower maintenance
INTERMIX the kitchen garden (instead of rectange) with flowering herbs/plants, lavender, clary sage, nasturtium, bergamot,.... edible, beautiful and practical,
plant along a curving pathway, use quick growing lettuces as a border plant...... radishes are also quick growing and can be planted to fill gaps until other plants mature
next year plant wigwams of red runner beans, sweet-peas, AS focal points
finally to deter pests plant marigolds, chives, ....
also by mixed planting pests are detered

I'm assuming you already know which parts of your garden are sunny and which parts are shady; that will really decide what can be planted where!

I would put in the rock patio area first. Once you get your hardware in, you can decide on what plant will go where.

If you don't have a lot of space, but like green things that climb, you may want to consider making a trellised arbor part of your rock patio. It will provide some shade and atmosphere, and you can plant climbing annuals for looks. Sugar snap peas grow well in the early spring, and are yummy, and can be replaced by pole beans in the summer. If you prefer flowers, you might try morning glories.

For the triangle area, perhaps you would consider an herb garden. They are pretty as well as functional. Herb seeds are relatively inexpensive, and are easy to care for. For some visual interest, put an obelisk or gazing ball or bird bath in the center of the triangle area.

Most important: PLANT WHAT YOU LIKE. You are the one that has to live with it!

Have a ball!

Cuba wasn’t a paradise before Castro so I’m sure it won’t suddenly become one afterwards. Batista was a dictator and there was a great deal of very obvious and public poverty. There is a lot of propaganda about pre-Castro Cuba and present day Cuba from both sides. The truth is somewhere in between but there are few places on earth than can even remotely be referred to as paradise, depending on your definitions.

Rototiller. Take it down to bare earth, remove all the plant debris. Mix a good top soil into it if you want to replant. Grass is the cheapest way. But use your imagination. Raised beds can give you flowers and veggies.
