The majority of the reputable reporting regaring this incident points to some kind of religious slander. I think that Zidane made a potentially costly mistake (with 10 minutes left to play) headbutting the Italian player. Nevertheless, the comments of the player are now all over the internet, and we all know about them. The religious insensitivity has been brought to trial, and I don't hear many people rallying around the taunts. In that sense, Zidane may have accomplished something. Whether violence was the best means of negating a charge that he was a terrorist is another question... Still, Zidane brought this issue to the VERY front page of newspapers around the world -- and it's an issue that has been too long ignored (rampant anti-Muslim sentiment throughout Europe). I applaud the consequences from that standpoint.

He didn't call him a terrorist, or say something about his mom. He told him he wished his whole family to die an ugly death.
As far as the soudi arabian incident, even though he's a fellow muslim, Soudis and Algerians ******* HATE each other. It's like a red sox fan and a yankees fan, those two countries have it for each other.
Zidane is a soft spoken, shy, respectful kinda guy, and he was probably the best soccer player that ever lived, or at least in the top 5. He just lost his temper. He doesn't give a ****, he won a world cup beating brazil 3-0, which is the most beautiful world cup anyone ever won, scoring two goals. And this world cup nobody expected France to even COMPETE in the first place(they took ireland's spot to play in it), so making it to the finals was a tremendous accomplishment.
Need I remind you ******* that France lost at penalties? Zidane didn't cost France the game, Trezeguet and Barthez didn't do **** at the penalties, and that ultimately cost them the game.
It was a very close game, Zidane or no Zidane. Both teams could have won, and Italy came out lucky. So ******* what, a silver medal in the world cup is still an amazing thing to achieve.
**** all of you.

Whatever the provocation Zidane headbutt of Matarazzi is inexcusable, a gross violation of football rules. This senseless assault is sheer stupidity - a moment of insanity that ends the once glittering career of a living legend - from hero to zero.
I have admired Zizou since France won the World Cup. Not anymore. He will be remembered as a French footballer who disgraced himself, let down his team mates and his country. Raymond Domenech by sarcastically applauding the redcard offence joins the rank of the dishonourable, unfit to lead any team.

The POOR Italian players??????????? Are you blind or what?
Zidane was insulted by Materazzi (I heard from the radio that the Italian football player insulted Z's mother). What would you do if some jerk said that to you???!!!
Zidane knew very well that he was being filmed by a dozen of cameras and if he did that, the insult must be really mean and nasty.
If I were Zidane, I would FINISH the match, and then punched the sh** out of Meterazzi.

zidane headbutted materazzi because he swore at his mum and called him a muslim terrorist and im sure he did more than that. you saw how materazzi was talking to him at first then he avoided him. then materazzi continued his rudeness and got served. he must have said something real bad that provoked him that made him headbutt him i reckon materazzi deserved more than that and that zidane should have avoided this until after the match and that people should not categorise all muslims/arabs as terrorist because if you get to know some, you will realise they are just ordinary people living by other people not trying to start trouble but being discriminated by the media making muslims being thought of as terrorists. as a muslim arab myself i have experienced the discrimination. zidane is great and i wish him peace in his life
bye
