Don't think so? Well, what do you want in life? Probably money (to spend on yourself,) love (which will benefit you,) and power (which will make yourself look good to others,) among other things. But how many of you really want to help the community and discover other people's interests, even though you may have nothing to do with them. Why are so many of us self centered?

Missy, you are going to the other extreme. Everyone should care more about themselves than others, however people should realize that every life is important.

PEOPLE GENERALLY ASSUME that our beliefs and attitudes determine our actions. So if we want to change the way people act, their hearts and minds had better be changed. This assumption lies behind most of our teaching, preaching, counseling and child rearing. But if social psychology has taught us anything during the last twenty years it is that the reverse is equally true: we are as likely to act ourselves into a way of thinking as to think ourselves into action. In this days you are right, people only think about money, power, and forget to think positive and to do something practical for this society. Why? because their mind is to narrow to think at others...

Selfism is an adaptive trait of every living organism: it helps you to staying alive and prosper, and to achive reproductive sucess. The selfish behaviour is not only centered around oneself, but it is also naturally extended to other individuals genetically close, and can also be extended through friendship to other individuals not so genetically close, but sharing interests with you.

Extreme selfism can be also disruptive, and avoid the individual to achive success. If an individual refuses to share with others, others will not probably share with him/her and doing so, the selfist will have less access to other's resources, reproductive opportunities and shared security.

being self centered is not a bad thing. some people just love themselfs more than others, and some can only handle themselfs. i wouldnt want someone who can barley handle there own life to be worrying about the community. would you?

Well one thing I have lived by explains it and it is absolutely true.

You are no good to anyone else unless you take care of yourself first.

If you don't eat you will become weak and of no help.
If you are sick you are of no help.
if you break a leg you are of no help.

If you are speaking more towards being selfish then I don't have a reason for that.

Perhaps they are just pigs...

Ever hear of the term "There is no such thing as a selfish act?"
