Most of the answers to this question make me ill. Why are so many people saying that "we didn't cause it", as if "it" is over? Oh, right, they don't know what they are talking about...
Western civilization certainly did and continues to perpetuate poverty in third world countries; slavery, colonialism, IMF, World Bank- all tools of Western civilization that serve to increase resources for the rich and have undermined the economy, health and environment of the rest of the world.
Do people really think that it is luck that allows us to use all of the world's resources, including those located in other countries? Do Westerns really believe that those people are just inherently poor, diseased and ignorant?
Yes, we should feel responsible because it is our civilization that is denying the rest of the world their God given rights.
On top of that, we should make an effort to STOP DOING IT and demand that the G8 redistribute resources equally.

We didn't cause it but we can help if they want the help. Some of the African countries are ran by dictators and such. While some of the people don't like it they don't know what to do about it. The genocides going on in Africa are the worlds problem not just Western Civilizations. Europe also needs to be involved as well as Asia. To help with the poverty in many countries or the conditions of some of their citizens they would have to be willing to change their way of life and even some of their views. Example: India if finally trying to end the caste system ( not easy and not always appreciated) and as they have they have had their economic gross national product increase by leaps and bounds the last few years. So they needs to be willing to work on them as we in the west can not fix anything they don't want fixed or changed.

We all have a responsibilty to each other. The problems of the world will never be solve by blaming this one or that one. If you believe in God, then you accept that mankind and everything that exsists is all from one place. If you believe in evolution, then you accept that at one time we all came from one genetic mother. In the end, we all share this rock, floating together through the endless space that is our only lifeboat in the universe. All of us should strive to daily share, give, educate, give a hand up, and learn to live in a way that makes questions like this only something we look back at in time and wonder about .

I lived in Africa for 8 years, and that i will allow you recognize that maximum human beings there do believe in God. and that i've got been to Europe, too, and that i will allow you recognize that maximum human beings in Scandanavia don't think in God, and a great minority in Western Europe don't think in God the two. yet those are purely information, and as quickly as you get Jesus on your innovations, i assume that information don't matter anymore.

What are you implying?
That being 5% of the worlds population and using 25% of the resources is having negative consequences on everyone else?

Did we cause the sorry state in those countries? No, their bad economies and, sometimes, most times, bad leaders did that.

Did we go over there and steal their money making them poor?
Did we go over and have unproteced sex just to give them a disease?
Did we go over and teach them how to live violently.

I don't think so. They were already poor, violent and disease ridden.
