I'd love to save water and energy, but how convenient is it to use a front loader? Is it complicated??? Is the spec detergent expensive? Can I use Rit dye in a front loader?

I'd get a front-loader anytime. I find that they clean more thoroughly than top loaders. The agitator in top loaders really don't do anything. Front loaders on the other hand, get tossed so I think it gets a better wash.

I also find front loaders much easier to unload. I don't have to lift the heavy, wet clothes out of my washer, I just drag everything into a basket (the openings are typically basket height, so it's just right.

It's not complicated at all, in fact, I like that you can customise the wash cycles to your fabric, and you can also choose the temperature control (i find that lacking in top loaders).

As for detergent, it's not more expensive, although you will have fewer choices. You'll typically need the european detergents, or Tide High Efficiency. You really need to stay away from the regular detergents because they foam too much and will affect the machine.

I checked the Rit Dye site, it doesn't say anything about using the washing machines to dye, mostly to wash off the dye, so I suppose it's ok. But don't take my word on that though!

Do you use Rit Dye in a top loader? I know someone who has a front loader and she loves hers. Tide makes a High Efficiency Detergent that is about the same price of all the other detergents...I would do more research but I know that they save you money and energy in the long run.

hi Joyce, in spite of the indisputable fact so that you could imagine it unusual getting an answer from a guy, in answer on your question about which kind of liquid you should use. you should use any. in spite of the indisputable fact that I now stay contained in the U. S. and maximum homes have accurate loading machines, i'm actual British, and we were utilising the front loaders for decades. considering my arrival to this usa, I actual have considered and tried many products claiming this and that, even some washer businesses will say use this or that sort. it is because they have teamed up with the detergent making businesses and artwork together to sort a one finished kit, which in turn places better money of their monetary corporation money owed. u.s. on the completed, is all about products and packaging, 2 years from now an similar businesses will be telling the customer that the extreme performance laundry detergent isn't almost as good because the extremely extreme one, i'm positive you could relate to what i'm attempting to describe. If for some reason you desirous to bathe your clothing utilising universal liquid that you'll use on pots and pans, it doesn't have any unfavourable consequences upon the bathing gadget. A the front loader is actual better on your clothing, there are many less parts of the gadget that rub adverse to the garments, and hence a lot less friction on the clothing. i'm hoping this ideas will be of benefit to you, and that i quite do understand lots about washing machines, exceptionally the front loaders. One very last little tip, They use a lot less water, so do no longer use too a lot detergent, in the different case the garments will come out feeling soapy. Paul M

I*ve had both; I*ll take a top loader any time. But then I*m always adding a piece of clothing or a towel or something to the wash after it*s started. You cannot do that with a front loader.
I also had my young son pull the door open on a front loader , what a mess that was to clean up. After that , it was top loaders for me.

Dont know about the RIT thing, however, Using a front loader is greatly more efficient and will save you a lot of money over time.
I personally believe they clean the clothes better and are more gentle on them as well.
There are a lot on the market and yes, some are very complicated to use. These are usuallt the ones which do the lot. i.e dry the clothes, these are inefficient little creatures and uneccessarily complicated. The one we bought has very simple instructions. I suggest you ask a salesman to let you read through any instruction manual before you purchase. If he wants your money he will do this.
Oh yeah, you use less powder by a long shot.
Definitely consider the front loader

Panasonic (and a few other brands) has a front loader that is tilted at 45-degrees, so you don't have to bend down to load your clothes.
