I always loved Cinderella. There are so many variations out there--from different cultures and whatnot--and there are many modernizations too...but there is just something that is oh-so-magical about Cinderella that makes me happy.

My favorite fairy tale was one that my mom read to me when I was a kid, and it came from my grandma's fairy tale book from 1948. (it was a book filled with the Grimm brother's fairy tales) It was called the Twelve Dancing Princesses. In the story there is a King who has 12 daughters, and everynight they lock themselves in their rooms, and in the morning their dancing shoes are completely worn through and destroyed. Finally the King announces that any man who wishes to find out the secret of how the shoes are worn through, would get three nights to discover it, and as a prize could marry one of his daughters. Well no one can figure it out until an old soldier came through the town. An old woman tells him not to drink the wine the daughters will offer him and hands him a magical cloak that makes him invisible. So the first night he follows the sisters down to a wooded area beneath the castle. He sneaks onto the boats that the sisters travel in over the underground lake that also have a prince in each. Then throughout the night the sisters danced with the twelve princes. They returned in the morning. The soldier followed them all three nights, and in the end he tells his story to the King who rewards him with a choice of his daughters. Because he is not as young as he used to be he chooses the eldest, and like every good fairy tale there is a wedding in the end.
I always liked this one best from my grandma's book for some reason, it isn't the best story out there and it isn't as colorful, it is just a fun little, lighthearted story.

Donkeyskin
A princess runs away from home after finding her dad wants to marry her. She disguises herself with the help of her fairy godmother. The princess works in a new kingdom for a farm. One day a ball is held, and the princess attends in a dress from her old life. The prince of that kingdom falls madly in love with this mysterious woman. He can't eat or sleep until he has her. Soon he becomes deathly ill.
And that's all I'm going to say. This is just a quick summary. The real fairy is much better and more detailed

My favorite fairy tale is definitely "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen. The mythology has always shown the mermaids as evil creatures who led the brave heroes of the war to their loss, but here, Andersen depicts a mermaid as if he would have done if she had been a human being. Some feelings, like love, unrequited love, despair, or even brotherhood are universal. Moreover, the end is so poetic, don't you think so?

Frau Trude Interpreted by Me (not for distribution)
Once upon a time there was a girl with a bad attitude. When her folks would ask her to wash the dishes or pick up her room or feed the cat she ignored them. When her mother asked her to serve tea at her bridge club meeting she said, “Screw you.”
One day she told her folks, “I’ve heard so much about Frau Trude, that she is strange and odd things happen around her, I have become quite curious and I will go see her for myself one day.”
This upset her folks immensely. Her father said, “You will not go to see Frau Trude for yourself, I forbid it.”
Her mother simply said, “I’m with your father on this one.”
Her father tried to explain, “Frau Trude is a bad woman who does wicked, wicked things. If you go to her I’m afraid you will no longer be our child.”
The girl being very stubborn and having a bad attitude became even more determined to see Frau Trude for herself. She set off to see Frau Trude. When she finally got to Frau Trude she was shaking and quite pale. Frau Trude asked, “Why do you look so pale?”
“Well, I’m mighty confused by what I’ve seen here at your house. First I saw a black man on your steps,” said the girl.
“That was a collier, a coal miner,” responded Frau Trude.
“Then I saw a green man,” said the girl.
“That was a huntsman,” said Frau Trude.
“After that I saw a totally blood red man,” said the girl.
“That was a butcher,” said Frau Trude.
“Ah, Frau Trude, I was terrified. I looked through the window and I didn’t see you, but I believe I saw the devil himself, with a head made of fire,” said the girl.
“Oho,” said Frau Trude, “Then you have seen the witch in her proper costume. I have been waiting for you and wanting you for a long time already. You shall give me some light,” said Frau Trude. Frau Trude then changed the girl into a block of wood and threw it in the fire. When it was in full blaze she sat down close to it and warmed herself and said, “That shines bright for once in a way.”
Not really that "heart warming" of a tale since the entire girl was turned into firewood, but the wooden heart she might have had would be warmed in the fire.
