The report that makes the most sense to me said that Materazzi said something along the lines of "I'd rather take the shirt off your wife," in response to Zidane's comment of Materazzi wanting his shirt. Such an insult would naturally follow the type of banter the two exchanged and would understandably (and maybe even justifiably) provoke a head-butting response from Zidane.

There's history between these two going back a few years ago. It could have been a racist comment but then again ... It could have been about that penalty France got and he converted it because! There was no penalty in a first place (Shouldn't have been).

My cousin was at the match and says he saw Zidane indicating he wanted out a few times, his shoulder maybe then again he was probably feeling really tired. There's a rumour that he's not having a very good time at the moment, reason why he is not finishing his contract, retiring early. So it could have been either a racist comment/nasty comment about the penalty and a combination of pain and whatever else is wrong with him that led him to snap.

One thing though ... If it really was the fourth official who told the ref what really happened then ... Where was that fourth official during the Holland V Portugal game? And since when do they start having viedeo replays? 'Cos it seems to me that's the only way in which they would have noticed it! We never saw anything until the video replay! My cousin says there was a lot of agitation on the side, officials gesturing and it seems they were really desperate to get him off.

There plenty of speculations. The Guardian (British Newspaper) reported that MAterazzi might've called Zidane a "Dirty Terrorist". other sources suggest he insulted his mother or sister. Zidane lost his mother at the age of 14, he said once in an interview that he considers mothers to be "Holy".
Either way, Materazzi is known for provoking others, using elbows to injur the offense. check what he did to villareals's Pablo Sorin at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Gyu8W1g2co&search=materazzi%20sorin

Zidane should've controlled himself, but if Materazzi called him a "Terrorist", then I think the FIFA should do something about this racist language and punish materazzi.
Just for the record, I was cheering for Italy, a great team shouldn't be blamed because of the actions of one player.
and for all of you there mocking the french, your langauge just represents the level of intelligence you're at.
Forza Italia, Viva La france.

Picosa: It is true that he should not have done it, but I think that Materazzi should be sanctioned and Italians should be a bit more respectful and behave in a more respectable manner. The reaction of the mayor of Rome is disgraceful and Prodi's speech about how the Italian team morally deserved to win was laughable. I love Italians, but I find them to be immoral, corrupt and of little moral integrity.
Also, why are you qualifying Zidane as a "sore loser?" The incident happened at a time when France had more chances to win. You are inviting others to "investigate" when yourself seem to have a completely subjective and biased view - and not too bright. LOL What a sore loser! :)

I heard that Materazzi said to Zidane that he is "Taliban terrorist". Probably because his birthplace is Algeria i think.
I dont know how many of you have seen that video clip of Materazzi called "the animal" and what he does when hes playing, most of the times he has bloody face and trying to kill everyone on the field with his "fkd up play" and "desire to kill?"
And my comment on that gesture:

OMG ZIDANE IS THE GREATEST, I WOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME BUT I WOULD PROBABLY AIM FOR THE HEAD!

Whatever Materazzi said!!! Zidane shoudn't have done that!!! Why are ppl exagerating this!!! Italy is a great team and it deserved being the champion. Let's not forget if there wasn't the fake penalty France could have lost the game in 90 minutes. Why do you want to make Zidane the only reason why France lost the game and Italy took the opportunity to win??!!!!. NO Italy deserves it and so does Materazzi. We all know that Marco is not a saint but you should not act like Zidane did infront of the whole world watchig you.

Besides ,Zidane is a great player. I'm really sorry for him becoz he had to say bitter goodbye to football and to the world cup. We would never think that Zidane could do such a brutal act. He should have controled himself.

Viva Italy... Bravo Cannavaro, Bravo Buffon and others.

According to some Italian lip readers Materazzi have said: "Dirty Terorrist" and something like "Let all you family die", since Zidane's father was from Algeria and a Muslim, and his mother is sick at the moment - all these might have contributed to the head butt.

Anyway, Materazzi deserves it! He was lying there on the pitch afraid to stand up... ;) Good job Zizou!

One baseless justification heard on the net and in the press for the headbutt is that Materazzi called Zidane "a dirty terrorist" due to his Arab/Muslim heritage which set him off. Wait a minute! If that ridiculous logic works, then why did Zidane stomp on a Saudi soccer player in a 1998 World Cup game and get red-carded? How could one "terrorist" provoke another "terrorist" by calling him "a terrorist"? Mmmm..., there might be one explanation: the Saudi was calling Zidane "a LOUSY terrorist".

Zizou, Zizou, Zizou... why? Once again, taunts of racism & homosexuality send the beautiful game into freefall (no comments about Justin Fashanu, please, hyuk hyuk hyuk...)

Henry dealt with it earlier in the game by telling that racist twonk Buffon - translates as 'clown', molto appropriate, non? - to f*off...

My friend, who speaks several languages, says the exchange went something like this...

Materazzi gives Zizou a nipple tweak.

Z (Smiling): You would like some more my sweet?

M: Not now nig*ger, Mohammed & your mother tired me out too much last night.

I know that this might be contentious, but I feel quite strongly that the likes of Cronaldo, Materazzi and all anyone else guilty of cynical fouls & provoking behaviour should be sent off themselves, too. Then, if it's still drawn at ninety minutes, we can forget extra time & penalties and just have bareknuckle fighting instead.

Really hope that whatever 'dignity' has been restored to the Italian domestic game by last night's 'win' will be ripped out from under them when not only do Lazio, Juve & co get relegated today, but the world title is rightly given to - can't believe I'm writing this - the non-cheating French!

Allez les Bleus!

If there are allegations that materazzi made a racial slur to zidane then i think fifa should investigate the incident. it's time to show that fifa's anti-racism stand isn't just for show. trash talk is expected out in the pitch but racial slurs are an entirely different matter esp. since french players (mostly black and naturalized french) have often been targetted in the past. it's a shame what happened to zidane but it'll be a bigger shame if racism had a hand in it and the the perpetrator, a fellow player and peer at that, goes unpunished.
