Unfortunately the answer is No. According to reports, the water quality in Kuala Lumpur is the worst in the Petaling Jaya region. So, people there won't even boil those water, they rather have their drinking water after filtered extensively. Although the best quality of water is in the Ipoh city (due to those mountains surrounding the city), they will boil it and wont drink it from the tap directly. Bacteria might be present in the water such as Bacillus spp or even Clostridrium spp. So, it save to consume after boiling it...

Oh yea.. in KL region, ppl might not afford expensive filter system, some rather buy water from the water machine at the road side...which uses the UV light exposure to kill bacteria and make the water clean.. so dun drink water 'raw'. u can only do that in Japan which is very cool...

It is generally safe to drink however people to live in the cities prefer to boil it first. If you go to towns like taiping, the water is so fresh off the tap.

Duh. Without a doubt, you need to boil it first. Yeah, I know it s u c k s, but what're you gonna do? We don't have the luxury of drinking water from the tap say like our western counterparts.
How else can you explain the "mat salleh" tourists buying bottled water by the dozens?

it's safe enough to drink if you have no other means of getting better quality water.
