I want to study it for self improvement not job prospects. Is it possible to become a better thinker through just self- reading the books or is a degree more helpful?

Sometimes, a degree is better because:

1. You can discuss your ideas with other people who have the same interest
2. You can exchange ideas with a professor who has devoted his entire life to studying philosophy.

With a book, you are exposed to ideas, but there is no interchange.
