Considering that he was taunted, probably racially, and that he has an unblemished past, and this was his last game, and hes one of the worlds greatest players, and millions of youngsters look up to him, should he not maybe have been fined privately?Or should Materazzi not have also gotten red?

You're kidding rite? So what you're saying is that he should be treated differently than all the other football players just because he's a celebrity? How fair would that be?! And since millions of youngsters look up to him, then isn't that more the reason to teach youngsters a lesson that violence is not the answer? If he really is "the world's greatest player" then he should know better than to pull am immature stunt like that. There's nothing in football regulations to say that taunting is against the rules, and I'm sure Zidane and all the other football players have done that sometime in their career. But to head-butt into Materazzi during the most critical moments in an overtime, and to think he can get away with it while billions of viewers are watching him on tv was really foolish.

This is a rediculous question. I mean first of all there was no racial insults as ZIDANE himself said. If you play professional soccer, or any otehr sports, these things (insults) happen all the time (no im not talking about racial, im talking about any other insults).
Just because Zidane was great he should not escape punishment about what he did. This is like saying the Queen of England can get away with murder because she's a queen...
So let me get this straight, you want Materazzi to get a red card because Zidane hit him? So consider this, you insult someone and he stabs you.. Should you be the one going to prison? Even if that person was well known and highly respected?

The truth is Zidane has a temper. Rememebr in 98 when he stepped on a Saudi player and got banned for 2 games? There is no place in the game for this.

Of course it was fair. Zinedine Zidane is my favourite player and i can fully understand why he reacted in that manor. During a World Cup final emotions are running high and when players have been commenting on other players personal life, then it must be hard to control your temper.Materazzi was in the wrong by talking about Zidane's personal life and he deserved what he got, but a red card was given to Zidane because it was physical and you can't give a red card to a player if you don't even know what he said. Materazzi deserved what he got and in my books and Zidane will always be a legend and my favourite player.

Because the SLY Materazzi verbally insulted Zidane with words (verbally) and there was no proof whereas the headbutt of Zidane was seen on the screen. On top of this, the lineman (the fourth referee, a Spanish) saw the replay on the video and reported this to the field referee who gave Zidane the red card. I thought that video wasn't ALLOWED to use in the WC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Figo did the same and he got away, even though the whole world saw the replay 'live'!!!

I am not saying what Zidane had done wasn't wrong, but evidently the field referee didnt see the gesture and had no right to send him out using the video.

I say Materazzi should have gotten a red card too. That is totally unfair. The assistant referee, I believe, saw the head butt but didn't he also see the taunting???? I don't think the assistant ref was going to say anything until Buffon that Buffoon said something. I am really mad about what happened to Zidane today. Materazzi had to play dirty to get rid of Zidane. I guess they were scared...

Materazzi's venomous slurs to Zidane during this game, were they known, would surely bring great shame to both him, his team and his country. Materazzi himself is (in)famous for dishonorable behavior and a rough playing style. No less than an Italian senator has questioned the propriety of including Materazzi on Italy's WorldCup team.
As captain of his team, Zidane, a reserved and soft-spoken person, should have endured Materazzi's base slurs and led his team to a deserved victory and glory. Instead, he opted to defend his and his family's honor and put Materazzi in his place. Like a man, out in the open, for all to see. Even if this meant he would have hell to pay for it later. If anything, my respect for Zidane as a decent human being has grown even stronger.

Zidane definately deserved a red card - no if's, and's or but's about it. I'm sure insults were traded between the two which must happen in all sports. I'm curious that in all Zidane's career he has never insulted anyone on the field before (people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones) Whatever insult Materazzi said nothing justifies the deliberate and abusive blow that he rec'd by Zidane - which I understand isn't the first time he done something like this. Forza Azurri!!!!!!!!!

To begin I must say that Zizou is a very good and mature player. I like his jigs on the pitch.

Whether it's fair or not, his reaction diserved nothing less than a red card. The official did not hear what materazzi told him but I tink the second official witnessed the header by Zidane. Thats why he was sent off leaving his provoker on te pitch.

We all love Zidane. But games rules to be followed. Taunting is very common in sports. it is not taken as offence until referee points it out to be. Definitely Materazzi should also have recieved a yellow card atleast. It was not atall a desirable farewell for prince of france.

I think that Zidane is completely wrong!Whatever Materazzi said to provoke him it doesn't justify his terrible nod!Anybody didn't t expect this behavior from a great champion like Zidane! What Materazzi did to deserve a punishment??The soccer, as every sport, is made of rules that have to be respected....
