I like Picosa's answer, except she apparently missed the whole part about France having twice the amount of shots on goal and controlling the ball a great deal more than Italy had, overall. France would have definitely won in the PKs had Zidane not pulled that sh*t, and even then-- had Henry stayed in they would've had a better chance even without Zidane.
As to why he did it, no one is really saying yet, but rumor has it Materazzi spouted out some harsh racial slurs. I also heard that Materazzi was relating Zidane to a terrorist or something, but I don't get how something that stupid would have set him off...

umm i dont know maybe him and materazzi had a past or something. i think zidane was just fustrated and needed to let his anger out. i know i would be fustrated to but why did he do that to poor materazzi??? theres no good reason. even if he pulled zidanes shirt who cares!! its soccer! they do it all the time. its nothing to be a big baby about. and im happy zidane got a red card! i lost all respect for him after i saw that. that was a cheap shot

No Matter what was said. One of the top players in the game made one of the most unprofessional moves I have ever seen in sports. He should be absolutely ashamed of what he did. He let himself and his nation down.
I supported Italy from the begining. Seeming as they are Hellenic Cousins of us Greeks across the way whom won euro 2004.
In response to the person whom said france controlled the ball more and had more shots. Well France was given a gift penalty kick on a complete dive and an absolute horrible call early in the first half. Italy was also robbed of a goal. As far as I see it italy should have completed another Clean sheet game in a 2-0 route of france.
To the lady who said that Defense wins. Yes Hellas Proved that at Euro 2004 with King Otto at the helm.
If the Italian said anything racial it must be what most people think of france's team. That most their players are not even french and were born and raised in northern africa. What do french fans have to be proud of? Their team is colonized from other nations that should have their own teams.
