I usually treat them with the upmost respect and politeness for as long as I can. If they begin calling me names I would simply say: "I'm sorry Sir/Madam, but I cannot help you if you insist on treating me this way, I find it very offensive." And sometimes I use reverse psychology: "Sir/Madam, I'm just a simple employee trying to make some money to feed my child, please do not take what I do so personally, as I did not mean to upset you so."
As the 'customer is always right', when I'm in a bad mood I just walk away and let someone else deal with it.

I've worked with the public a lot. There are difficult customers everywhere. You just have to try to be nice, even thought they have gotten on your last nerve and you really want to tell them off, because it wouldn't do any good. They think they are right and you can't change their mind. A lot of them just want you to argue with them so they can cause a scene. If you are nice, they have no reason to cause a scene and if they do, they look stupid. They've made themselves look bad and not you.

kill them with kindness. Go out of your way to be nicer to them. They are more than likely not like that all the time. I'm sure you have been a difficult customer at somepoint in your life too.

don't let them bother you, just let them know that you are there to help. if they continue to be difficult ask them to leave, one less customer isnt going to hurt you, or your other patrons... because they are probably taking away from the service you could be giving someone else.

never take it personally, always take into consideration that there could be so much more going on for that person or sometimes people are just mean, keep your cool and if you get angry when they are difficult it will ony escalate them further.
