I was a Dark Shadows devotee during college -- whenever someone who had a TV would let us watch.
Here's the scoop on Barnabus -- from Wikipedia
Barnabas Collins is a 172 year old vampire played by Jonathan Frid on the ABC serial Dark Shadows. (In the remake, Ben Cross assumed the role.) He lived ca. 1795; when as a mortal he was supposed to marry Josette du Pres played by Kathryn Leigh Scott, despite having a last second fling with Angelique played by Lara Parker. Angelique was the dark, evil witch (and Josette's personal Maidservant!) who, via the conjuration of dark, evil magicks made Josette fall in love with Jeremiah Collins played by Anthony George when she was jilted by Barnabas in favour of Josette. Barnabas and Jeremiah fought a dual, later on, as a stated proviso of a hex that Angelique put on Jeremiah, that was designed to induce Jeremiah to fall in love with Josette instead. Jeremiah lost said duel, and Barnabas lost Josette. Later Angelique took revenge on Barnabas by summoning a hexed bat to bite him. When that was accomplished, Barnabas became a vampire, and was later chained in his coffin by his father in the family mauseleum. Also, Josette jumped off of Widow's Hill, in an act of suicide, after Barnabas came to her and offered to make her a vampire, too.
In the "present" of 1967, Willie Loomis (John Karlen) who was foraging for the Collins family's "lost jewels", found the coffin in which Barnabas was chained, and released him. Willie was attacked by Barnabas, and made his servant. Barnabas introduced himself to the current clan of Collinses as a "cousin from England", who was a hard working businessman never seen during the day. Barnabas was originally supposed to be on for a few weeks, and was a rather self-centered evil vampire, but fan response was so terrific that producer Dan Curtis kept him on. He would be cured of his vampirism, and become the family defender. As such, Barnabas & company would fight werewolves, warlocks, witches, zombies, and just about every other creature that went bump in the night. Later the writers returned Barnabas to his vampire state, where he fought his own personal demons and vampiric urges, as well as those who menaced the Collins Family. Time travel and parallel universes figured prominently in the last episodes of the show. Barnabas was once again cured of his vampirism, and the last time in the series we see Barnabas would be in 1971 when he, Dr. Hoffman, and Prof. Stokes returned from a magic enabled excursion to 1840 to save the Collins Family from warlock Judah Zachary.
The last episodes concentrated on 1840 Parallel Time, where Jonathon Frid played Bramwell Collins, Barnabas Collins' son in that timestream.
In 1970 Dan Curtis made the movie "House of Dark Shadows" that was set in a different kind of Dark Shadows universe. Many of the characters were the same, and the story centered around the releasing of Barnabas Collins from his coffin by Willie Loomis. In the movie Barnabas was returned to his evil roots, and was definitely a monster. By the end of the movie, half the Collins Family is dead, killed by Barnabas in his desire to turn Maggie Evans into a vampiric reincarnation of his lost love Josette..
