I would like to use some sort of layaway or payment plan to get a powerbook.

Put it on your credit card. Credit cards are payment plans for whatever you like. Don't have a credit card? Apply for one at a place like CompUSA or Microcenter. They sell Macs and if you get approved, you can buy a Mac.

If your credit isn't good enough to get a card/credit line big enough... then start saving. Put each "payment" you'd make aside, and then buy it when you have enough.

if you're a student, you can get a discount, but macs are not cheap! you could probably get a refurbished one at a lower price. check out apple's web site for more info.
