Oh My God... why, I knew there was rampant ignorance on the effect of pot smoking and just about the drug itself in general, but some of these comments just take the cake...

First of all, marajuana is not like crack, or heroine, or Oxycontin (Rush Limbaugh's drug of choice). It is not in itself inherently addictive, although people with needy psyches can become psycologically addicted to it. Many people smoke it for years, decide they've smoked enough, and simply quit smoking it. And unlike crackheads, heroine junkies, or Oxycontin abusers, potheads are highly unlikely to sell their babies or steal their families blind to get that fix. Marajuana is not a synthetic drug--it's a plant that has been growing on this green Earth for as long as other plants have been growing on this green Earth. All you have to do is dry it out a little and smoke it. Marajuana does not in all cases by far lead to the use of "hard drugs"--I have smoked it for years and have NEVER had one single desire to shoot up, lay my lips on a crack pipe, or ingest potentially lethal painkillers that can be instantly and horribly addictive (ask Rush--he had a bag of 1,000 Oxys in his house!) None of my pot smoking friends have, either.
Nor does marajuana "kill brain cells". It may make you a little foggy around the edges while you're smoking it (I wouldn't reccommend taking an IQ test while you're really high--you will destroy your self -confidence in your smarts, lol), and chronic use does cause you to be a bit apathetic and unmotivated about what's going on in the world around you. But those who end their long-term use will find no adverse effects brainwise, although they might have to catch up on all the stuff they missed learning while they were high. Not only that, it's been recently discovered that smoking marajuana decreases your chances of getting lung cancer... although admittedly, it's not really good for your lungs to put anything but air into them.
Marajuana is actually better than cigarettes or alcohol in that (a) it doesn't impair your senses like alcohol does and (b) it's not stuffed with synthetically created carcinogens. Alcohol is the number one vehicular killer in the United States, but there are no traffic fatalities that I know of resulting from the use of marajuana alone while driving. I'm not recommending driving high to anyone, but studies have shown that the reflexes of people who smoke and drive aren't that much different from when they're sober. Alcohol, now--that's a completely different story. And cigarettes? Cigarettes are so freaking bad for you, THEY ought to be illegal. They cause more cancer in people who smoke and people who don't smoke than asbestos and probably all other carcinogens combined. Marajuana is actually good for cancer patients--it helps them combat nausea so they can actually eat after chemo, and eating helps them gain/maintain strength. Marajuana is also good for glaucoma patients--I don't know how it works, but apparently it does. The government has busted its fair share of little old ladies who were just growing and smoking the stuff so they could delay their blindness.
All in all, given what I know about the drug from reading about it, and yes, longtime personal use, I don't see the big issues about legalizing marajuana. I would even support government regulation to a degree--legal age for use 21, sell it at ABC stores since they're already set up to sell alcohol to people 21 or over, allow people to grow a couple of adult plants a year as long as they have a licence to grow and charge an annual rate of even $200 and we might have a way to pay for Bush's war on Terrah without making our grandkids pay for it. I'd totally pay $200 a year to grow my own pot, and so would millions of other people. And those who have brown thumbs would most definitely go to the ABC store to get it.

OK aside from your blatant disrespect for the English language I'm going to answer this one.

1. If the government were to legalize marijuana how would they control it, tax it, and otherwise maintain a regulatory position on it.
2. Legalizing it would bring some seriously unwanted attention from the rest of the uptight world around us. Remember kids we're trying to be the proud shining example of morality to the world and we've said for so long that Marijuana was a harmful and illegal substance the minor changes in the legality of it are drawing serious country wide and even global consequences onto us.
3. The cigarette industry would have a field day if that were to happen, think cigarettes are bad now wait till they get their hands on Marijuana. I'll tell you right now the high road pot smokers take when looking at cigarette smokers would be leveled really quickly.
4. It's been shown through extensive testing that Marijuana affects the centers of your brain that register pain, affect motivation, and boost the appetite, not that it's some miracle for anyone with cancer. The cancer is still there and you'll still die wether it's the cancer or something else.
5. Glaucoma patients are smoking Marijuana because it causes the blood vessels in the optic nerve to constrict, thus releasing some of the pressure on the eye and nerve itself.
6. Truthfully Marijuana is NOT physically addictive, everyone can snicker and point at your teacher tomorrow because they're continuing the littany of ignorance and stupidity handed down from the mighty government. The facts are there, Marijuana is the second most used illegal substance in the known world led only by Coccaine the derivitives thereof.
7. Above all else people look at Canada for an example of a society where pot may not be legal but the enforcment is merely a slap on the wrist, lower crime rate, less drug problems, fewer gang related activities, fewer auto accidents per year. All in all Canada probably has it just about figured out.

All in all that about sums it up, smoked for three years and quit in a week. There is no reason to fear Marijuana or it becoming legal . The fear must come from the effect it would have on the non-Smoking population.

Marijuana is not legal because it is not one of the drugs like cigarettes, caffeine, and alcohol that were popular in mainstream society when the drug laws were passed.

Pot definitely kills fewer people and is less dangerous than these other drugs, but it's still not harmless. If I have to explain this to you, I think you might be in a pot haze right now. It is not exactly like anything, it is its own drug.

Cigarette smoking is banned more and more places. We tried banning alcohol, which might have been a good idea if it worked, but instead we got the Mafia and all the gangsters as a result. My guess is that pot will be legalized eventually once people realize that the laws do more to promote organized crime than to cut down consumption, but it will take a long while before that happens.

Although I don't encourage marijuana use by any means. I understand your question and I think it is political.

Alcohol has a huge lobby in Washington. It has a lot of money and influence in congress. They have bought their legalization long ago.

Marijuana has no representation in Washington, why, its illegal. I think it is safer then alcohol, I don't think it causes the recklessness that alcohol causes. And cigarettes are also dangerous, not in human behavior but with health issues. It has gotten a lot of grief from the govt in the past couple of years, that too is political.

For me, alcohol is a much more insidious drug. Not only because of the health effects but also because of the danger it can cause with people who are intoxicated and the problems that creates.

It would be nice, if we could find a good reason to use it. At least we could tax it.
We have plenty of things on the market now, so we don't need it. What I would like to see is a ban on alcohol. It's done more damage and caused more deaths. There isn't anything positive about alcohol at all.

It is a kind of bad drug that kills. So is alcohol. So are cigarettes. If we made marijuana legal, thousands of more people would die every year because of it. We want our citizens to LIVE.

Because it could not be taxed like tobacco or alcohol. The state would want to put a very heavy tax on it and it would not sell because it's so available to get else where. It's easy to grow and there will always be illegal means of getting it.

It is not a bad drug, and it is not all bad. It is the people who abuse its use, that give it a bad reputation.
Some people can handle their drinking, but then others are totally out of control. It's the same thing. You just have to be responsible enough to use it.

It's not illegal because it's bad for you i know that because war is bad for you too and our economy is based on that and to be honest they love to send people to war. It's illegal because you can plant it at home and no one will make profit out of it. I asure you that if there was a way to make big profits while legalized then it would.
