I have a 4 month old baby and he's been pulling at his ear and biting everything he comes in contact with, including his fist and fingers. Yesterday he took a screaming fit and wouldn't eat and then finally I gave him some baby tylenol because I figure it's his teeth. Although he did have colic as a baby so I'm wondering if that could be it too? I'm not sure any answers would be grateful.

Are his gums swollen? if not, better bring him to a doctor in case it is a case of ear infection rather than teething. Since he is pulling his ear and ear infection are quite common among babies.

If they are, well then comfort him, be patitent and offer cold soft & clean things for him to bite into to help ease the pain.

just imagine having a major toothache yourself and you will understand how your baby is suffering.

Do Babies Scream When Teething

Colic is usually outgrown by age 3 months old. So, especially, if he hasn't had the problem for some time, it's unlikely.

It could be his teeth (pulling on the ear is often a sign of teething), but it could also be an ear infection. You may want to have him checked by his doctor. But keep in mind that crying can cause the ear drum to be bright red and cause a diagnosis of ear infection when there isn't one...so try to have him calm for a half hour or so before the exam.

If he's pulling on his ears he could have an ear infection, which could cause pain elsewhere & his screaming. Take him to the doc as soon as you can. But if it is teething which yes, could also make him scream, try teething tablets, teething rings, cool wet washcloths, baby orajel or in severe cases my ped said that you can give them half of the recommended dose of infant tylenol. It more than likely isn't colic since that usually disappears around 3 months of age. The web site listed below has homeopathic reliefs for teething & earaches also.

Mine do...they havent had a tooth come in by itself. They cut 2 or 3 at a time. Triple the screaming. And I have twins so double that. Try a teething ring. The baby orajel NIGHTIME it is stronger and lasts longer. Rub their gums with your CLEAN finger to help the teeth break through. Put a wet CLEAN rag in the freezer for them to chew on. I heard a lot of people say a frozen waffle lol...whatever works also the Hylands homeopathic teething tablets work great and they dissolve in their mouth. tylenol helps as well

and you should like blinder_ said check for ear infection, it is one of the signs but it's probably teething

Good luck! I feel your pain, doubled

My son got his first 2 teeth at exactly 4 months. We know that he loves to have a cold wet washcloth put in his mouth but I had to hold it in his mouth at that age. I also called a hospital and spoke to a nurse who told me to put 1 teaspoon of sugar into 2 ounces of water, and this is a pain reliever. It works really well. The first night, my son slept for 4 hours. It was so nice. I would recommend trying that, after he ate the bottle, he passed out. You can even research babies and sugar water. It's controversial but I think you'll do anything when you are desperate enough and that was what the nurse at the hospital told me to do. I'm not sure about the weight limits for tylenol but I use the infant suppositories with tylenol sometimes for my son when he's really miserable. He's been very sick with ear infections and that sometimes helps, it works faster than regular tylenol.

Yes they scream when they are teething--if pulling on ears may have a ear infection which is quite common especially if you do not have the baby sitting up enough when feeding them...the bibs with the teething rubber corners are wonderful---make sure with the tylonol that the doc tells you just how much to give to much can be deadly--if the baby cries thru the night try putting a spoonful or 2 of rice cereal in the formula the baby might not be ful(trust me on this one if ya want some sleep)

good luck p.s. if putting cereal in bottle make sure you have a bigger nipple hole

He could be teething, but I can tell you three kids later, the pulling on the ear usually means an ear infection. The will pull on it or poke at it, or just hold their hands to it. You should get him to the doctor's to make sure. It's hard to tell with babies, but it doesn't hurt to make sure. If the Tylenol is helping for right now, keep using it for his comfort until you can get him a doctor's appointment.

Babies do a lot of stuff when they're teething...chew on anything they can get ahold of (including their hands/fingers), scream, cry, become inconsolable (even when you're holding them), have diarrhea, run a fever, drool, have problems falling asleep, have problems staying asleep, etc. If he's tugging at his ears, it could be teething...when both of my boys got their canine teeth, they used to pull their ears so hard I worried they were going to pull them off. :) If your son is only 4 months old, these are probably his first teeth. I doubt his front incisors (teeth on the top and bottom in the center) would make him tug on his ears, but it could. Is he in daycare? If so, you should call your pediatrician and see if they want you to bring your son in...screaming and ear pulling are the two major signs of ear infections.

yup, they scream when they are teething. Ear pulling is a sign of ear infection. Baby Oragel, and baby Tylenol will treat the symptoms, but you may need to see the Dr. for antibiotics for the ear trouble.
