Does every NYC cop have paperclip in his mouth or just only McLain?

Die Hard 3, i love this trilogy, but how does he manage to ascape from the ship, by using paper clip, which he get's from his mouth? I sill don't get it.... I guess he's Nucking Futs if he's carring it all the time.
