I need a name for a character in my novel. Something just a little weird, but not unheard of. Like "Constance" or "Delilah". Male or female. Submit as many as you can think of.

Thank you

Some of my answers are more common in the UK than in the US, so they sound a lot more common to British ears. Some of them are also kind of old-fashioned, but they are all names of people I have met at some point in my life.

Males:

Ian
Brooks
Alistair
Horace
Sinclair
Stratton
Clark
Walker
Norton
Samson
Julius
Julian
Rufus
Garrett
Briggs (not to be used in conjunction with Stratton in any way!)
Price (alt, Pryce)

Female:
Bronwen (not my real name, but still one of my favorites)
Undine
Tamsin
Starling
Grayling
Alexandria (or, alt. spelling Alexandrea)
Ravenna
Prudence
Agatha
Margarethe (or, alt. Margaretha)
Althea
Tuesday
Sunday
September
December
May
Maeve
Mavis
Brynn (alt, Brynna)
Beryl

If you are looking for ideas, a good source that I have found is simply baby name websites, as well as lists of plant, gem, and animal names. I have found some really good ideas in all of those.

Also, you may want to consider the meaning or historical derivation of your name to enhance your character. For instance, the name Peter literally means "rock", and the name Beryl is the name of a type of gem. Picking a name with definite denotations is a good way to tell people about your character without having to spell it out for them.

Picking names is hard, because the wrong name can really kill a character, while a good name can save a semi-weak one. Best of luck!
