Well, i watched the complete match and saw the scene.. I was quite angry in the earlier few hrs also and believe it is really unfair.
But after reading all the other fan's opinions, i realise that if Zidane think of his team wellbeing before his personal dignity, he would not do such a thing and been given a red card, smashing the hope of their dream of World Cup. No matter how ugly the words are, he should know what is more important..
Well, i do think it is very unfair. But this soccer, what can we do? Each side tried to play fouls to win.
PS: U can read my questions and the answers given by all the fans.. They are quite helpful in understanding all these

Firstly, there is no basis for accusing Materazzi of being the villain or racist. Why people are suggesting he provoked Zidane is a mystery. There is no evidence to suggest Materazzi did anything wrong. The supposed professional lip readers employed to decipher Materazzi's language are not coming up with a definitive answer as there are many different interpretations of what could have been said floating around. For example, some sources say it was a racist slur by Materazzi while other say it was something about Zidane's mother, sister, and/or wife All we do know is that Materazzi and Zidane were talking back and forth. It could have been Zidane who provoked a verbal response from Materazzi which Zidane hated or it could simply have been a mutual exchange of obscenities. Nobody knows right now and anything said is pure speculation based primarily on bias for 1 side over the other. These are things people who say Materazzi "must" have said something are overlooking in their rush to defend Zidane. There is no proof and it is simply a case of finding Materazzi guilty without evidence. Guilty until prven innocence. Simply because you hate someone doesn't mean they are guilty.
Secondly, people who portray Zidane as a normally calm person either do not know his tendencies or overlook the evidence. Zidane has a history of spontaneous violent outbursts on the field including other headbutting instances and stomping on players with intent to injure. .
Thirdly, there was no reason for Materazzi to be red carded.

I agree! Zidane is a level headed guy and I saw Matterazzi talking to him. I wonder what he said that set Zidane off. I bet it was something really bad. The Italians probably planned this to get rid of Zidane. I agree, real dirty playing!! That is poor sportsmanship just like a dirty tackle-- no difference in my opinion. Boy am I mad about that!

Trash talking is harmless and a grown man, who is/was the team captain and has played the sport for years should know this. Words do not hurt. However, to take it to the level where you violently headbutt another player who did NOT physically come at you is tactless, unprofessional and sets a bad example. He deserved to be red carded and sadly, he left his career on a low and shameful note and probably contributed to France's loss. Zidane's actions do NOT represent what soccer is about.

yes of course matterrazzi had 2 be red carded 2 but the law of soccer says tht attacking a player without the ball means a red card and zidane attacked the defender while he didnt have the ball so he deserved a red card although he is a gr8 player but i think mettarrazzi said somethin racist 2 zidane so he naturally reacted like that

Zidane stepped over the line. Matterazzi is talking too much, but that happens a lot. There's no excuse for Zidane's reprehensible action.

I agree with you totally. Italy had a dirty play from th ebeginning. They really hurt the French in order to send them out (like Henry, Vieira, and then Zidane). However, what Zidane did was pretty stupid. I can understand how he felt, but he should have kept his temper and not end his carrer like that. He might had shot that penalty instead of Trezeguet and they might have won!

Are you kidding me? I dont care how much trash talk there is, Zidane's behavior is way out of line. The far better way of handling the situation would have been to make sure your team won.....not throw your head into someone. AND this is NOT the first time he has thrown his head into someone....he is dirty and a disgrace!

Yes, the mafia took control of Zidane and made him do it. They implanted a receiver into him when he played for Juventus.
All Italians should have been red-carded for stealing the cup with boring defensive play during most of the whole competition..
