If he was a brutal, he was doing so within his own country and managing it well as compared with today's Iraq.
When were there more killings in Iraq? During Saddam's regime or today?
No one likes to kill his own people. Saddam was no exception.
He has always been used by America for their own designs.
He was made to attack Kuwait and Iran by Americans.
Probably he is under punishment for falling into the American traps time and again.
Is it justified to punish a Nation for one individual who is already captured?
Has he been offered a fair trial under an independent and free international court of law?
If he was not fair who else is?
Others are proving to be worse than him.
If USA claims to be fair, it should leave Iraq and hand over Saddam to an International court of law to face the allegations leveled against him.

The US made him what he is. In the 1970s, the US offered him support even as he was running away from Iraq. They helped him achieve power, overthrow the government and create his brutal regime. They armed him with nerve gas and anthrax and encouraged him to use them against Iran in the mid-1980s. (Remember Iran? The Iranian revolution? The hostages?)
The US continued to support Saddam until 1991, then strengthened his hold on Iraq with their idiotic sanctions, despite the total removal of all WMDs. You disagree? Who do you think handled the UN's and US's "humanitarian aid" and "food for oil" program of the 1990s? Saddam's opponents? While sanctions and US bombs killed over 500,000 children ("We think the price is worth it" - Madeline Albright) Saddam got stronger because he held all the incoming for himself while Iraqis got weaker.
And let's not forget that NO illegal weapons have been found nor was there any proof of them (UN inspectors said no and the CIA said no). The false claims made recently by Rectum Santorum were criticized by the Pentagon, FFS. Shrub ordered the invasion for oil, nothing else.
---
There's a difference between cleaning up your own mess and sweeping it under the rug. The US is trying to hide its own responsibility for Saddam's crimes.
What do I think of Saddam Hussein, aka So Damn Insane? He's equally as bad as any US president since and including Nixon.

I think Saddam was a product of his environment, and he grew into a monster not even his own family could control. I don't think he is/was as smart or crazy as Hitler, though--the prize for that goes to Bush/Cheney (Bush being as crazy as and Cheney being as smart as). I think Saddam should be handed over to the Iraqi people and every one of them should be able to get in a lick on him, give him a little of the torture they or their relatives recieved--not enough to kill him, though, because that privelege would be saved for last, for the oldest living man in Iraq to carry out in any way he wishes, while the whole country watches live.
