altho i am an italy fan, i've always believed Zidane was a soft spoken, quiet but resilient player. altho, there are certain flashes in his past that indicate otherwise (i.e. his physical retribution for a verbal abuse).

i believe Materazzi uttered a religious/racial slur (being that Zidane is a French Muslim of Algerian descent). It must've been words that incited such anger in Zidane, that's for sure, as he opted to retaliate with an obvious headbutt to the chest clear for the cameras to see!

i believe Zidane should have kept his cool, though as there was only 10minutes left in extra time. He could have have it sorted out later. Materazzi should have been reported to FIFA and subsequently penalised.

As a result of him letting the provocation get to him, he has marred the final game of his career. One that will marr people's memory of this marvelous player. I was very sad to see Zidane leave the football stage in that manner.

All the same, italy totally deserved their win as their team played a brilliant defensive / counter attacking game, with their midfield and defense working together with the precision of swiss clockwork.

Zizou is a barbaric man who knows only violence against an opponent's cheek comments. If zizou is a real star he should be wise and just laugh at the comment. Hey, this is not a fighting championship! This is football! Whatever Materazzi said Zizou should never answer with violence.
If Materazzi did say Zizou a terrorist, and zizou punished Materazzi with violence, that means Materazzi was right. Cause it's a terrorist way to answer things with violence.

I heard that Materazzi said, "Your mother is a terrorist wh%@!" Hey who wouldnt stop and punch the person saying that? I cant stand Italy, they play cheap and dirty football. And for all you who say that Zidane is violent, Materazzi has built his career on kicking the players rather than the ball. His a violent and ruthless moron who deserves any hits he recieves.
