I had connected a hardisk to my PC as slave, although everything seems fine, but in the 'My Computer' or in Explorer, I'm not able to view its drives. I'm using Windows XP SP2. In the Device Manager I looked and everything was fine. But I can't locate the drives. Please help!

There no pins, I just connected the 2nd hard disk to the slave cable(grey). The Device Manger is showing that the device is working properly, but I just can't see the drives of that hardisk on My Computer, nor I'm able to locate those drives through any of the softwares like through Windows Media Player, because in the Open menu there are no drives of the slave.

Have you tried "disk management" in "computer management"? Look for your drive here. If its there (listed as disk 1) then you will have to assign it a drive letter.

If its not there, then you need to check the jumpers of the new drive (and the old one also) to make sure they are not conflicting.

The other possibility is, you are using a 40 conductor, 40 pin cable instead of an 80 conductor 40 pin cable (Ultra DMA).

often a undesirable sector is generated while the disk is now not in a position to hold specific guidance in that component of the disk. often times its generated from the rather pc; ie: it lost guidance someway in a undesirable crash and it categorized it as a bas sector. Othertimes it would desire to be a broken component of the stress, the two it have been given scratched while the pc became moved violently (happens in laptops lots) additionally if the stress became wiped out. this is secure to think of that the disk might ought to get replaced because of the fact the worst case state of affairs is you broken the stress. yet while the pc has failed you are able to attempt reformating the disk. by ability of doing this this is going to the two test for undesirable sectors and attempt to repair them. The fix decision isn't obtainable once you nonetheless have archives on the stress because of the flair danger to lose the archives. I had a tension that suggested undesirable sectors, I reformated it and it nonetheless works high quality after 6 months. Its well worth attempting formerly you circulate out and purchase a clean hard disk!

Yes if you just installed a new secondardy harddrive you must use a partioning program like fdisk or use windows to do it. Wholefully this is your issue. I assume you knew about the master slave system. Most l;ikely if you bought it brand new they sent some type of disk with a partioning program with it. if you got it used then you can use windows too but i would use the supplied one first if not you can use windows to partion and format it.if so i can give you more detailed instuctions if you contact me at freedomthroughrecovery@yahoo.com

Try using the Disk Management in Computer Management. (Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management) to see the status of the slave disk and rectify the problem.

Check to see if the Master/Slave pin selector on the back of the drive is set to Slave or it will conflict with the master and not be seen by winXp. Good luck!

It is possible that it does not have power. Open the computer case and check that the power cable is firmly connected.
(When you say "slave" it sounds like you mean an internal drive. If that is not the case then please add details to let us know what the situation is.)
