A Mekong Catfish is the largest freshwater fish and there's even a photo here...

However, the biggest fish is a saltwater whale shark, which can measure up to 50 feet long.

Incidentally, a squid is not a fish.

Leedsichthys problematicus.

It was 22 meters (72 feet)—almost twice as long as a whale shark, the largest fish swimming today. Those working on the fossil reckon the species may have reached sizes to rival the blue whale.

"It's by far the biggest and most complete Leedsichthys ever found, which makes it the biggest fish ever found," said Mike Barker, head of paleobiology at Portsmouth University.

(Ok, I just saw the part about "freshwater" when I was doing my "preview" so this answer is wrong...but still interesting so I will post it anyway.)

Some catfish grow until they die, and they can live a long time. Carp (including koi and goldfish) likewise can grow until they die (depending on environment), and there are anecdotal reports of enormous age and size.
It is easier to answer the same question of saltwater fish: the whale shark is the most massive. IF you extend the meaning of "fish" to include crustaceans and various other invertebrates, coral is much the most massive (both fresh and salt). The mobile "fish" that is longest in one dimension is probably a squid, but not a freshwater squid.

Freshwater, it's always going to be some species of carp or catfish.

Just FYI, there is no reason for a carp to die, and in an environment free of predators but full of prey, the carp will grow until it fills its environment. Given unlimited space, its theoretcial size is also unlimited. The only things which kill carp are disease, accident, getting caught or being eaten by another fish. They just dont seem to die of old age.

Now that Im posting this, women in Beverly Hills will all run out to restaurants, demanding this months Fountain of Youth, carp a la Bert..

Mekong giant catfish
The Mekong River Basin is home to more species of massive fish than any river on Earth, they added, and Mekong fish are the primary source of protein for the 73 million people that live along the river.
