As someone who has travelled extensively, there is no clear cut answer. Depending on your expense account limits, the best experiences can usually be found at the higher end hotels. But, I must caution you, thisisnot always the case. Rental cars are a bit different. Once you have established yourself as a frequent renter, you should expect good service from any of the major rent-a-car companies. ALLOW ME AN EDTORIAL COMMENT...THANK GOD I'M OFF THE ROAD. I REALLY DO HAVE A LIFE.

For renting cars, I've always found Alamo the best and most reliable (and have gotten some great cheap upgrades).

For hotels, I prefer Marriott and Quality Inn. Avoid Scottish Inn, Red Roof Inn. Sleep Inn can be hit or miss. Holiday Inn Express is what it is: a bed in a box.

Sheraton/Westin with a Starwood Preffered membership give you an upgraded room and a private lounge.

Hertz/Avis are equally good and with their preferred status you get upgrades and faster service.
