usually its because they also think that when they do win, they'll win big. that's why some people are willing to sustain huge losses, in the hope that they'll win a sum large enough to cover their losses and make a good profit too.
some casinos/illegal gambling sites/jackpot machines use a strategy whereby they allow people who're playing for their first few times to win a modest sum. they call this "beginner's luck". this encourages the newbies to continue betting in order to win larger sums of money. at some point in time, however, the house would start winning back the money from those people.

They are not wealthy like you and this is the only legal way they know they might get wealthy, or at least dream of it.
