Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to prepare, other than buying insurance. Corporations can afford to build highly advanced structures that may or may not withstand "the big one".
Normal working families cannot afford that luxury. People like us can only prepare mentally and for the worst. Have a plan, specific to your home, and have a kit with food, water and first aid. Anything else you know of(medications, etc).
Most importantly, it's better to prepare than worry.

I'm ready for it, because I live 1,400 miles away in South Dakota!
